This limited edition Fendi Matisse Spy is new for S/S 06. Personally, I never had much of a special regard for arts. But when it came down to it, I¡¯ve always had favorites that I loved to look at. Monet, Picasso and Matisse always managed to impress me the most. I truely believe that Henry would have loved to see his impressionistic works on these exclusive bags; I think the Spy looks gorgeous in this version. A wonderful symbiosis of fashion and art, like I haven¡¯t seen it in a while. Each piece is hand painted, which makes each bag in the limited series completely unique.

I was taken (somewhat unwillingly; there might have been some whining like a 12-year-old on my part) into the Cole Haan boutique in Atlanta by my mom yesterday, and I¡¯m glad I was. The leather is luxurious and smooshy, but the pleating and construction still allow it to mostly keep it¡¯s shape. It comes in several sizes (from tiny to enormous) and a few colors, but my favorite was the medium in crisp, summer-ready white. The bag was light as a feather and had enough room for even the biggest packrat to load it down, but the straps were so thick and soft that it would take a ton of stuff to make it uncomfortable to carry. I was thoroughly impressed ¨C I hope Cole Haan continues on the road that brought them to this bag. Buy through Saks for $498.

If you had a reputation like that of Christian Louboutin shoes, why on Earth would you delve into a realm that you can not conquer just as well?? Instead of learning the ropes of the handbag world, Christian Louboutin has released some fug bags for fall that look as if they need to be tranquilized and locked up. First we have the hideous Christian Louboutin Orylag Hobo which appears to have saddle bags or really horribly off center breasts covered by orylag fur (rabbit fur) and dominatrix patent leather trim. This bag costs nearly $4000 at Saks, which means it is a frightfully expensive mess. Sure it would make a good pillow, but that is about it. Then we have the Christian Louboutin Alpaca Satchel. Hello bad perm job of 1983. Sure, once you actually touch the alpaca it will feel soft, but looking at this bag is like sitting in a lecture for 3 hours staring at a horrible head of hair in front of you. The kind of horrible where you hear nothing the instructor says and merely wonder if the person happened to get struck by lightning on the way to class. The calfskin trim and chain link handles do not help much. At least this bag is not as much as the first, costing $1695 at Saks.

John Galliano toned it down in Paris with the Christian Dior Spring 2007 Collection. While his line was nothing flashy, the simplicity and clean lines worked for me. Sometimes it is nice to look at something that is not too noisy or busy. The Dior Handbags were ¡°gimmick-free chain-handled handbags¡± that sported the same shape but different materials and colors. I have mentioned from time to time that I was a swimmer growing up, all the way to and through college actually. People think when I say this I mean I splashed in my backyard pool, quite the contrary. At 5 am I was in the water, at 3 pm I was running and lifting weights, at 5 pm I was back in the water, and the next day I did it all over again. For years this was my routine, since the age of 4. A perk of being brought up in South Florida was the ocean; a total negative for anyone near in Florida afraid of marine life is also the ocean. Guess whose swim coach had them swim in the ocean on Saturdays? I cried. The thought of a squishy but totally awful jellyfish, a hiding stingray, and a hungry shark terrified me. I think it is fair to say that one of the on going debates around here involves fringe. While some of you love it, others can¡¯t stand it and still others (like myself) go back and forth. Some handbags seem even better with a hint of fringe and then others look like it had been thrown threw the shredder. A little while back Amanda wrote about the Cleobella Alvie Fringe Tote and when it came to that bag, the ¡°fringe¡± was horribly executed.

It¡¯s difficult to think of new ways to make a basic tote shape new and different, and although I really like the Badgley Mischka Suzanne Tote, I¡¯m not sure that it can really be called ¡°new¡± or ¡°different.¡± After all, Beirn has a line of woven watersnake totes already. But sometimes different isn¡¯t a necessity, particularly in the face of a reasonably priced exotic bag that can be used year-round and all day.

I have one problem with the Kooba Ava Satchel, but I think that one problem is overshadowed with the things I like about it. We¡¯ll start with the positives, because I¡¯m in that kind of mood today. Another positive is the leather, which Kooba is known for. Many metallic leathers get stiff or even rough when treated to increase their shine, but the leather on this bag is super supple and just as soft as any non-metallic bag you¡¯ll find. The size is also great ¨C small enough to take to a bar or out to dinner, big enough to actually put stuff into it.
