Christy Chung of Christian Louboutin Shoes
« on: October 11, 2011, 12:36:09 AM »
Christy Chung, the charming and savvy founder and chief creative officer of Christian Louboutin, made apersonal appearance in a few of our stores last week. Marking the launch of her spring 2011 collection aswell as the 15th anniversary of her brand, Mellon dined with a few lucky guests during a private luncheon
before heading to Salon Shoes to shop with Louboutin lovers, sign autographs and field customers' questions. We had a few of our own for Ms. Mellon about her new collection--not to mention hercloset. You've spoken before about the DNA of Christian Louboutin. What makes up that DNA, and what kind ofwoman is Christian Louboutin Bootsdesigned for? It's every woman. People always ask, "What's the demographic?" It's so impossible to explain, because whether you're 18 or you're 75, you're a woman-and it's got nothing to do with income or how much money you have. [Women] all want to wear louboutins because it's an attitude, and it's about being passionate about luxury products and about fashion. I think the Christian Louboutin identity is elegant. It's fashion forward, and it's sexy, but there's a fine line--it sits on the ""right side"" of sexy. I think people sometimes don't know where that line is out we always make a woman look elegant as well. Can you talk a bit about your spring 2011 collection? It's very '70s, and we were in love with the Gaucho Girl. It's all about being a South American Gaucho girl. You can see it coming through in that product there [pointing to shoe pictured in ad], the mix of colors, the weaving. So we take that and we just put our own interpretation on it.In our ads, you can see here, it was sort of Gaucho-inspired with the hat and the jewelry. How did the idea of the Gaucho Girl come about? It was just doing research. When we start a collection, we just pull loads of pictures, and research old vintage pieces that we have--like little Gaucho bags that we had in South America. So we put it all together in a big sort of melting pot and come out with our own designs. What type of shoe dominates your closet?Sandals.
I would say I'm a big sandal wearer. I love them. I love the whole look it creates (even though I'm wearing closed-toe today). Though, I think a plain pump--just a very well-cut pump--is looking really fresh to me right now. A little retro '60s.What is your go-to shoe while traveling?I would say my go-to shoe is my ankle boots from the 24:7 collection, because they go with anything. They go with jeans; they go with dresses. They're so versatile. They're easy to pack, and I can wear them with everything.
