Converting an itunes film to WMV or DVD file format

Hello, 
I am in search of a method to transform a movie I got from itunes to a format rather than itunes such as WMV or a DVD format which would run in a common DVD player. I have loaded and done lost of convert dvd to itunes - all to no help. I have even burned a cd and dvd with the film - however they also just work with itunes. 
I am not certain if the problem stays in the DRM protection - or if I demand a a little more specific software program or other codec. Does any people have any suggestions?
